Film Programme for 2008-9 Season
All films start at 7.30pm, usually on the second Friday of the month in the Memorial Hall. The bar opens at 7.00pm.
12 September - Happy Go Lucky Director: Mike Leigh. A film which places a modern day Pollyanna beside a misanthropic driving instructor in an unusual and challenging odd-couple comedy.
10 October - The Singer Director: Xavier Giannoli. A rare French musical about an ageing variety singer embarking on an unlikely affair with a woman half his age. One of the unexpected discoveries of Cannes in 2006.

Happy Go Lucky The Singer Persepolis
7 November - Lust, Caution Director: Ang Lee. Touted as the most sexually explicit film of Ang Lee's career, this is a story of personal sacrifice and patriotic duty set in wartime China. Tang Wei plays Wong, a female spy who infiltrates the home of the collaborator, Mr Yee and becomes caught in her own charade.
12 December 2008 - Persepolis Director: Vincent Parronaud, Marjane Satrapi. Adapted from Marjane Satrapi's autobiographical graphic novel, Persepolis tells the story of the author's childhood in Iran, exile in Europe and return home in striking two-dimensaonal animation.
9 January - Blame it on Fidel Director: Julie Gavras. A comedy of manners following the nine-year old Anna, who struggles to understand the changes in her life as her bourgeois Parisian parents embrace Communism.
13 February - I Served the King of England Director: Jiri Menzel. This Oscar-winning director tells the story of the rise and fall of an innocent, industrious waiter, against the backdrop of the Third Reich in the 1930's.
13 March - The Visitor Director: Tom McCarthy. The film offers a unique twist on the odd-couple scenario. Part feel-good buddy movie, part political polemic, The Visitor is always suprising.

Seach'd The Band's Visit
3 April - Seach'd: The Inaccessible Pinnacle Director: Simon Miller. This first ever Gaelic feature film tells the story of a family uncovering the truth behind their own stories in a journey to the top of a mountain on the Isle of Skye.
8 May - The Band's Visit Director: Eran Kolirin. An Egyptian brass band, travelling to the opening of an Arab arts centre in Jerusalem, is stranded in a small Israeli town. Forced to depend on the kindness of strangers, they discover the human faces behind their supposed enemies.
N.B. The venue for the May screening will probably not be at the Memorial Hall. We will advise members of the venue for this last film in due course.
